Internal Kinematics of the Andromeda Ii Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
The High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer on the Keck I telescope has been used to measure nine radial velocities having a median precision of ' 2 km s−1 for seven red giants belonging to the isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxy Andromeda II (And II). We find a weighted mean radial velocity of vr = –188±3 km s−1 and a central velocity dispersion of σ0 = 9.3 −2.6 km s −1. There may be evidence for a ...
متن کاملIntegral field near - infrared spectroscopy of II Zw 40 ?
We present integral field spectroscopy in the near-infrared of the nearby starburst galaxy II Zw 40. Our new observations provide an unprecedented detailed view of the interstellar medium and star formation of this galaxy. The radiation emitted by the galaxy is dominated by a giant HII region, which extends over an area of more than 400 pc in size. A few clusters are present in this area, howev...
متن کاملH α Kinematics of the SINGS Nearby Galaxies Survey – II
This is the second part of an Hα kinematics follow–up survey of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) sample. The aim of this program is to shed new light on the role of baryons and their kinematics and on the dark/luminous matter relation in the star forming regions of galaxies, in relation with studies at other wavelengths. The data for 37 galaxies are presented. The observation...
متن کاملInternal Kinematics of the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We present new radial velocity results for 178 stars in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy, of which at least 158 are probable Fornax members. We combine with previously published data to obtain a radial velocity sample with 209 stars, of which at least 179 are probable Fornax members. We detect the hint of rotation about an axis near Fornax’s morphological minor axis, though the significance o...
متن کاملElliptical Galaxy Halo Masses from Internal Kinematics
The halo masses of nearby individual elliptical galaxies can be estimated by using the kinematics of their stars, planetary neb-ulae, and globular clusters—ideally in combination. With currently improving coverage of galaxies of ordinary luminosities and morphologies , systematic trends may be identified. Bright, boxy ellipticals show strong signatures of dark matter, while faint, disky ones ty...
